The Tailed Beasts Of Naruto

The tailed beasts in Naruto are commonly known as Bijuu. The Bijuu are also referred to as “Chakra Monsters”, since they are living forms of chakra. The tailed beasts have a history of their own and here it is.

The History of the Bijuu

Many years before Naruto was born the world was being terrorized by a rampaging, giant monster known as the Ten-Tails. Through countless struggles, the beast was eventually defeated by twin brothers, Hagoromo and Hamura Ōtsutsuki. The beast was the sealed within Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, making him the very first jinchūriki. By using the Ten-Tails’ power to perform many great deeds and promote peace during his lifetime, he eventually became known as the “Sage of the Six Paths“.

The sage then divided the Ten-Tail’s chakra into nine living entities, the Bijuu. The tailed beasts are incredibly strong living forms. Other than their vast differences in appearance the Bijuu are commonly identified by the number of tails they have. The Sage named each of the nine beasts and explained to them that they are linked even though they are now separate and that one day they would be merged together again. The nine beasts are:

  1. Shukaku
  2. Matatabi
  3. Isobu
  4. Son Goku
  5. Kokuō
  6. Saiken
  7. Chōmei
  8. Gyūki
  9. Kurama

Part of the reason that the tailed beasts had been created to provide and maintain balance and peace in the world as well a to prevent the return of the ten tailed beast. Over time the nine beasts drifted apart from one another, mainly due to Kurama’s belief that the number of tails represented the amount of strength one had.

As time went by people started viewing the Bijuu as nothing more than beasts and strength that could be used in war. The Tailed Beasts became tired of that treatment and soon started resenting humans and became the terrifying beasts they were feared and rumoured to be.

In order to get and make use of the chakra power the beasts held, villages began fighting and sealing them into humans. Thus creating their own jinchūriki. After the Third Shinobi World War, the Akatsuki started. They are an organisation dedicated to capturing all of the jinchūriki. They aimed to extract the tailed beasts, so that they could resurrect the Ten Tailed Beast. Due to the Akatsuki’s actions, the Fourth Shinobi War had been started.

The Akatsuki managed to gather seven of the nine tailed beasts. In order to capture the two remaining tailed beasts, the leader of Akatsuki is forced to revive the dead jinchūriki placing the beasts back inside of them. Through Naruto’s efforts, the Bijuu decide to give their chakra to Naruto to try to get their freedom.  However, the Akatsuki’s leader recaptured the freed tailed beasts. He then became the jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails. After a fierce battle he was defeated by the Allied Shinobi Forces which leads to the tailed beasts being removed from his body.

Madara then becomes the Ten-Tail’s jinchūriki after a failed attempt to defeat him. Madara then attempted to use Infinite Tsukuyomi on the world. Naruto used the tailed beasts’ earlier donations of chakra to try and defeat him but was unable to do so in time. Madara was afterwards unwittingly used to restore Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, who tried to take what portions of the tailed beasts’ chakra Naruto still had.

Naruto and  Sasuke defeat Kaguya in one of her dimensions. Afterwards, Naruto talks Sasuke into letting the Bijuu live. The nine tailed beasts are then once again free to peacefully travel the world and go their separate ways. Although, fragments of the tailed beasts’ chakra remain within Naruto, allowing his body to act as their “meeting ground”.

Into Boruto (spoilers continued)

During an investigation on the Ōtsutsuki clan, the hunt for the tailed beasts, to claim their chakra, began once more. Naruto arranged a telepathic meeting with the Bijuu to warn them and to discuss how to handle the new threat. Three of the beasts decided not to join, as they were distrustful of humans. With the final defeat of the new threat, the beasts are once again free to go about as they please.

The Nine Tailed Beasts

The Bijuu have large quantities of powerful chakra that are shown to be coloured red and they are able to transfer a portion of their chakra to whomever they want. The Bijuu’s ultimate technique is the Tailed Beast Ball. This technique can also be used by a jinchūriki while they are transformed. Other than the beast ball, each of them have their own unique abilities.
