What is a NEET?

In various anime as well as manga there are many references to the word N.E.E.T such as in No Game No Life and Eden in the East. So what exactly does NEET stand for and what are NEETs?

The abbreviation NEET stands for “Not in Education, Employment, or Training.”

NEETs are youths who prefer to stay at home. The word NET was originally used in the United Kingdom but quickly spread to other parts of the world such as Japan.  In Japan, the classification of NEET is comprised of people aged between 15 and 34. They are not employed, not engaged in housework, not enrolled in school or work-related training, and are not seeking any form of work.
