Yay, yay, yay, Tokyo Ghoul season three is here under the name of Tokyo Ghoul: re which fits with the name of the manga. To say I have been waiting is an understatement and I am really, really happy this season has finally arrived.
If you have not read the manga, you are probably confused by the sudden appearance of other one-eyed ghouls but you should keep in mind that there is a two-year gap between the end of the previous seasn’s story and the current season.
Just a quick recap, root (season 2) ended with the CCG’s raid on Anteiku and the death of Kaneki’s best friend, Hide. Still hurts me. Kaneki then walks with Hide’s body to the CCG and the season ends. Bam!
Enter season three where the CCG has created a special team, known as the Quinx Squad. The new team aims to provide the CCG with the push they need to exterminate Tokyo’s unwanted residents. As humans who have undergone surgery in order to make use of the special abilities of ghouls, they participate in operations to eradicate the dangerous creatures.
The leader of this group is Haise Sasaki, he is a half-ghoul, half-human who has been trained by the famed special class investigator, Kishou Arima. He cares for his subordinates who are half and half like himself.
As for episode one:
I understand why they introduced the new characters and all that, but I just wanted more of Kaneki and well, we got Haise Sasaki. Who is for all intense and purposes the old (pre-torture) Kaneki, just without the messed up, crazy, psycho side that he showed when he was with Aogiri Tree. Instead, the episode shows us more the new dynamics and basically sets us up for the coming story. We spend quite a bit of time with other members of the Quinx Squad and get a nice look at what type of characters they are. We are also shown how Haise and the squad fit in with the CCG. We are also introduced to a new ‘bad-guy’ who they are tracking with the code name Torso. However, this also feeds nicely into the coming plot as it shows that there is more to this than a random killing spree.

I also really enjoyed the brief appearances of characters from previous seasons and can not wait until we can actually see and get them involved properly.
This weekend I shall be re-binge watching season one and two and going back and reading over older chapters of the manga. Just to refresh my memory. Are you also excited for this new season and hoping that it lives up to the hype?
I am so happy that this show is back!!!
