It is that time of year again where one season of anime ends and another takes its place. The winter seasonal anime has a decent amount of promising titles but I do not have too high expectations for the season overall. I think this season is easing us into the year where the much bigger titles and expectations are waiting.
As per what has become the norm, the 2022 Winter Anime Season lineup is overflowing with reincarnation and isekai options. I myself do enjoy the more unique ones in those genres but I too am on the lookout for other focuses. I decided that for this year, I want to put more effort into watching more sports anime, as such, each season I shall be following along with at least one sports anime. I also want some series where it is more story-based rather than visual and ‘comfort’ anime. By comfort, I mean the typical same olds that I tend to lean towards. There are a few titles below where I have read the manga and I am really looking forward to seeing the adaptation as well as titles that I had never heard of before looking into the seasonal release list.
I was also surprised at the number of releases where the main character gets turned from a male into a female and is now trying to return to being male.
1. Shikkakumon no Saikyou Kenja
As the greatest sage in the universe, Mathias is constrained in strength by the magical crest he was born with, so he thinks reincarnation is the only way to become the strongest of them all. Mathias is overjoyed to find during his first attempt at rebirth as a young child that he has been born with the perfect crest for magical fighting! Sadly, the world into which he was born has appallingly low standards for magic, and everyone believes that he will fail! In order to prove everyone incorrect, Mathias must do so in the style of the world’s strongest sage.
2. Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru
Wakana Gojou is a high school boy who is learning how to be a doll-maker. When he was younger he was traumatised by a childhood incident involving a friend who objected to his love of traditional dolls. He spends his days in the home ec room at his high school. Whilst Wakana sees the likes of fashionable and well-connected Marin Kitagawa as an alien from another planet, she sees him sewing and decides to get him involved with her secret hobby: cosplay!
3. Tensai Ouji no Akaji Kokka Saisei Jutsu
Being a genius isn’t easy… Prince Wein is ready to betray his country. Who could blame him? With the impossible duty of reigning his pitiful little kingdom, this guy just can’t seem to get a break! But, thanks to his bright plan of auctioning off his realm, this slacker prince should be able to retire for good. Or, at least, that was the plan… until his treasonous schemes have disastrous and unexpected results, namely, inadvertent successes and popular support!
4. Kenja no Deshi wo Nanoru Kenja
Arch Earth Online is a virtual reality MMORPG in which Sakimori Kagami actively participates. An experienced gamer, his name and appearance resemble a famous old wizard with a beard from a novel about a ring. He decides to buy an appearance change item to spend his expiring currency. With the item, he changes to his avatar to what he thinks it would look like if he ever played as a girl. While in-game he falls asleep and when he wakes up, the game has gotten more realistic.
5. Leadale no Daichi nite
The virtual reality game was Keina Kagami’s final hope of freedom after a tragic accident had left her on life support. One day, the concerns of her previous life seem to be gone when she wakes up as her game avatar, Cayna. However, this new world does not seem to be quite the Leadale she knows.

He is responsible for the deaths of 18 high-ranking officials in one night. After their first encounter, Son Ryang-ha sets his sight on her. Chateau is surprised to learn that he has his own plans for her: he wants her heart. Son Ryang-ploys ha’s to get her attention are out of the ordinary. He gifts her targets as tethered and battered victims, and he’ll go to great lengths to spend more time with her. 7. SABIKUI BISCO
In a post-apocalyptic Japan, a plague-like wind whips across the dry, sandy landscape. In its wake, nothing except rust may be seen on both living and nonliving things. Mushroom spores are suspected of being the culprits of the current global catastrophe. Archer Bisco Akaboshi, known as the “Man-Eating Mushroom,” is on the FBI’s most-wanted list because his arrows instantaneously sprout mushrooms wherever they land. In reality, he’s a “Mushroom Protector,” someone who spreads fungus to improve the soil and bring it back to its former state. 10. Baraou no Souretsu
There have been a lot of fights and bloodshed for the crown of England throughout history. In the Middle Ages, a series of great civil wars came to be known as the War of the Roses. King Henry VI and his son are being overthrown by the Duke of York. He wants to become king himself, so he wants to get rid of them and take their place. The Duke has a son named Richard Plantagenet, the third of his name. It was a dark day with many bad signs. Richard III is neither male nor female, but has traits from both sexes. His childhood is shaped by his mother’s hatred of him, which makes him disgusted with his own body and angry when people call him a demon. It scares Richard when he sees images of England’s old enemy Joan of Arc, who taunts that he will bring ruin to everyone who knows him. He thinks that he can get to heaven by helping his father become the king.
Sequal season anime releases that I plan to watch:
Since these anime are not new titles for the season, they get their own section at the bottom of this list and do not count towards my planned 10 seasonal anime. That means, of the anime releasing this ‘winter’ I aim to watch at least 12 of them. However, I shall likely be watching more.
Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou 2nd Season
I adored the manga and I took a while to adjust to the animation style but adored the anime just as much. I am watching the first season as my first in the 52 anime in 52 weeks anime challenge. The anime has gone beyond the manga, so I am not quite sure what to expect.
Saiyuuki Reload: Zeroin
I have no idea how this is going to fit in with the other seasons of Saiyuuki Reload: Zeroin. I do not know if this is a reboot or a continuation. However, that is perfectly okay. Either way, I will be happy. I am looking forward to seeing the updated animation style, the action and reconnecting with the crazy cast of characters.
What anime are you planning on watching from the winter season?
