Akebi’s Sailor Uniform (Akebi-chan no Sailor-fuku) was not part of the 10 seasonal anime I was planning on watching. However, I could not help but be drawn in thanks to the amazing visuals. I did not understand why people kept commenting ‘foot anime’ and ‘feet studio’ on my posts about this anime until a few episodes in. Here are my impressions about the first five episodes of this series and whether I shall be continuing on with it or if I shall be dropping it.
- Pacing: Calm and as collected
- Characters: Fun to watch
- Tone Day to day
- Animation: So so pretty!
- Sound: Clear
Episode-by-episode
I have given quick impressions for each of the 5 episodes while keeping it as spoiler-free as possible.
Episode 1 of Akebi’s Sailor Uniform
We learn quite a bit about our main character Akebi in the first episode. We see what kind of person she is, what kind of energy she usually has, we learn about her fairly standard wish (to wear the sailor uniform and make 100 friends) and we get to see the family dynamics. We also get to see her daily setup. I think this is going to be a rather enjoyable slice of life anime for me. The trouble she runs into in episode one was brilliant and I love the way it was approached and resolved. I already adore the school principal.
Episode 2
I thought so from episode one, but this anime is really visually stunning. We also get to see why Akebi is so fixated on a sailor uniform. She is a rather unique child. I am astounded at the level of detail in this anime. Her school life must have been pretty lonely, my heart kinda breaks for her and I now understand why her goal is friends. I am so glad that we get to see her dad and that there is no tragic backstory there.
Episode 3 of Akebi-chan no Sailor-fuku
I can now say I understand why this is said to be the anime about feet, or by the feet studio. Akebi is a weird child. I was not really expecting a character shift in this anime. Their school offers so many activities for their clubs and I can not help but be sceptical. I enjoyed getting to know two of the other girls in Akebi’s class.
Episode 4
The visuals still take my breath away. Akebi questioning whether she has friends makes sense but was still a tad sad. The different clubs were shown off again and I can not help but wonder where does all the space for these clubs come from and the finances. I am really enjoying the day to day antics of the girls. The further into the series we get, the more questionable some of the camera angles are getting. Or maybe I am just noticing it more.
Episode 5
Observations are strong with this episode. I have already lost track of the character names. It is kind of off with the way they are going around spying on everyone. These girls are incredibly talented. Their relations are interesting to watch and I wonder how Akebi’s mind works. I feel sorry for the short girl trying to get her drink from the vending machine. As per normal the animation was stunning. I did not notice any feet shots in this episode, but I did not keep an eye out for them either.
Will I continue to watch Akebi’s Sailor Uniform and do I have any expectations?
I’ll watch this just for the pretty visuals and animation. However, I am looking forward to the calm pace and feel of the anime. Getting to know the other characters in the class is another aspect I am looking forward to watching, even if I do not know or remember their names.
Saying that, if I miss episodes or if this one becomes one I started but never completed, I won’t be upset. If I complete this in a binge-watch or watch weekly, I will be happy either way.
I plan to continue this, but if I do not, oh well.
