What is Cherry Magic About?

Cherry Magic! introduces us to Kiyoshi Adachi, a 30-year-old office worker. Upon reaching his milestone birthday as a virgin, he mysteriously gains the ability to read minds. While this could easily be the setup for a crude comedy, the series takes a much more heartfelt approach. His newfound ability leads to an unexpected discovery. His charming and well-respected colleague, Yuichi Kurosawa, has been secretly harbouring a massive crush on him. What unfolds is a delightful journey of self-discovery, nervous blushing, and an incredibly wholesome romance.
Why Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!
I let the random generator choose which anime I watched for the fourth Anime March Madness submission, and it landed on Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!

How far did I get in my first watch-through?
I started this one while it was airing but got distracted around Episode 8, so I was really looking forward to finally finishing it! I remember loving the sweet and awkward moments, so I couldn’t wait to see how everything wrapped up.
My Thoughts on Cherry Magic

What truly sets Cherry Magic! apart is its commitment to portraying healthy relationships. There are no toxic tropes or problematic dynamics; we have a slow-burn romance that prioritises consent and mutual understanding. Even with the inherent awkwardness of mind-reading, Adachi and Kurosawa navigate their feelings with refreshing maturity. The pacing is spot-on, allowing their connection to develop naturally. The conflicts, while present, are resolved realistically, without unnecessary angst. And yes, they get married! That ending was everything I wanted and more.
Characters That Charm and Captivate

Adachi and Kurosawa are the heart of this series. Adachi, plagued by relatable insecurities, is a grounded protagonist who learns to embrace his newfound abilities and confront his fears. Kurosawa, despite his seemingly perfect facade, harbours his own vulnerabilities, making him a complex and endearing love interest. Their dynamic is filled with sweet, funny, and occasionally heartbreaking moments, making their relationship feel incredibly authentic.

The side couple, Tsuge and Minato, adds another layer of charm. While their mind-reading dynamic may seem redundant to some, it is a unique perspective, especially given their distinct meeting and relationship. Their cat-centric bonding was a delightful bonus for this cat lover.
Visuals and Sound: A Sweet Symphony

While I wouldn’t say the animation is my favourite, it’s still pleasant. The colour palette and character designs match the manga well, but there are a few too many still frames, making some scenes feel static. That said, the adorable eye-catch images were a nice touch.
The real star here is the sound design. The opening and ending themes are incredibly catchy, and the fact that the main leads sang the ending song together added a special charm. The voice acting is stellar, giving each character even more personality and depth.
Hooked by…

Initially, my interest was piqued by the promise of a Boys’ Love anime. However, the undeniable chemistry and genuine connection between Kiyoshi Adachi and Yuichi Kurosawa truly captivated me. Their interactions, filled with nervous blushes and sincere affection, created a magnetic pull that kept me invested throughout the series.
Overall Verdict

Cherry Magic! is a rare gem in the BL genre. It offers a heartwarming, funny, and wholesome romance while celebrating self-acceptance and personal growth. This is a must-watch if you’re looking for an adorable, refreshing BL anime with great character dynamics and minimal drama.
Bingeability – Is It an Easy Watch?

With only 12 episodes, Cherry Magic! is undeniably bingeable. The lighthearted tone and the genuine emotional connection between the characters make it easy to devour episode after episode. It’s a perfect palate cleanser between heavier anime or a delightful treat for any romance fan.
Do I Recommend It?

Absolutely! Cherry Magic! cast a spell on me, and I’d happily let it do so again. It is a must-watch for fans of wholesome BL romances, offering a delightful and refreshing take on the genre. Those who appreciate slow-burn, well-paced relationships will find themselves thoroughly invested in Adachi and Kurosawa’s journey. Ultimately, anyone seeking a light, heartwarming anime that prioritises communication and genuine emotional connection will discover a truly magical experience.
