I was surprised by the news that Ranma ½ will be returning this year (2024) with a remake 35 years after the release of the beloved original 1989’s anime adaptation. Ranma ½ is a beloved manga series created by the renowned mangaka Takahashi Rumiko. This shōnen manga blends comedy, romance, and martial arts uniquely and entertainingly. The original manga ran from 1987 to 1996, consisting of 38 volumes. It was first adapted into an anime in 1989, becoming a staple in the anime community.

Ranma ½ follows the adventures of Saotome Ranma, a skilled teenage martial artist, and his father, Genma. During a training journey in China, they accidentally fall into the cursed springs of Jusenkyo. As a result, Ranma transforms into a girl when splashed with cold water, reverting to his male form with hot water. To complicate matters, Ranma is engaged to Tendo Akane, a girl with a strong dislike for boys. The series explores their chaotic lives, filled with martial arts battles, romantic entanglements, and humorous misadventures.

Ranma ½ is generally recommended for audiences aged 13 and up due to mild suggestive themes, fantasy violence, and some comedic nudity. Ranma ½ holds a high average rating of 8/10

Content Warnings:

  • Gender Bending: Characters change genders due to a curse, which is a central plot element.
