The story follows Yoshino Somei, the granddaughter of a powerful yakuza boss, who discovers—through a magazine article, no less—that she’s engaged to Kirishima Miyama, the heir of another notorious yakuza family. Initially indifferent, Yoshino soon realises that Kirishima is far from ordinary. Beneath his charming exterior lies a chaotic and dangerous man who thrives on unpredictability. Their relationship becomes a thrilling battle of wits, dominance, and trust set against a backdrop of yakuza politics, betrayal, and unexpected romance.

I’ve been a fan of this series for years. I first read the manga long before the anime was announced, and when the adaptation was confirmed, I was beyond excited. I even re-read the manga in anticipation. However, life got in the way—specifically, my wedding—and even though I made time to watch weekly episodes during my honeymoon, I somehow never finished the series.

I checked my screenshots folder, and it said I got through the first three episodes. However, I know I watched more than three episodes of this. So, I went to where I track my anime viewing (My Anime List and Anime Planet), and as I suspected, I got a lot further than three episodes in. I left the series at episode ten. I only had two episodes to go, but I left it at ten. Why?? I wish I knew. At least I know why this anime has been on my mind a lot. I knew I was so close to finishing it, and I genuinely enjoyed this series, so why did I just not complete it?

I cannot believe where they left the anime! While it makes sense, given where the manga was at the time, I was eagerly anticipating a certain scene getting animated—only to be left hanging. Now, all I can do is hope and wait for a second season.

I absolutely adore the opening and ending credit artwork—the aesthetic choices are stunning. The moment when Yoshino finds out about her engagement from a magazine article? Wild.

However, I have mixed feelings about the animation. The exaggerated “cartoonification” with overly large eyes was a clever way to highlight comedic moments and undercut serious ones, but at times, it felt distracting. That said, the attention to detail—such as the intricate designs of Yoshino’s outfits and small touches like her hair sliding down the wall after a fall—was impressive.

One of the strongest aspects of Yakuza Fiancé is its character development. Yoshino’s transformation from a seemingly docile fiancée to a formidable presence in the yakuza world is compelling. Kirishima, on the other hand, remains an enigma—equal parts ruthless and devoted. Their dynamic keeps the tension high, making every interaction electric. However, some side characters could have used more development to add depth to the overarching conflict.

Yoshino Somei and Kirishima Miyama are both unhinged in their own ways, making them a fascinating duo. Kirishima being called a masochist is hilariously accurate, and his reaction to Yoshino’s indifference about his flings was priceless.

Yoshino stands out as a protagonist. She isn’t a passive female lead—she matches Kirishima’s intensity with her sharp wit and resilience. She asserts dominance in situations where most would crumble, making her one of the most compelling romance anime heroines in recent years.

A special mention goes to Shouma Toriashi. His dynamic with the main couple adds layers to the series, and I loved watching their interactions. The world-building around the yakuza groups feels natural, with their alliances and betrayals adding to the tension.

While Yakuza Fiancé prioritises character interactions over fights, the battles that do happen are beautifully animated. The choreography is well-executed, making every confrontation visually engaging.

This is the kind of toxic relationship I love in fiction. The slow shift from wariness to understanding and begrudging trust between Yoshino and Kirishima is gripping. The relationship isn’t about sweetness or traditional romance; it’s about survival, power struggles, and two equally dangerous people learning to coexist.

The yakuza underworld is depicted in a way that feels immersive without overwhelming exposition. The power struggles, betrayals, and calculated alliances make for an engaging narrative beyond just the romance.

I was also surprised to see a particular ‘adult’ scene make it into the anime adaptation. I knew it was coming, but it still caught me off guard. One of my favourite moments was Kirishima’s reaction to his hookup, mentioning that Yoshino might already have someone she likes. That visibly got under his skin and was a great moment of character development.

Since I had already read the manga, I was hooked from the start. What kept me invested was the high-stakes nature of their relationship. It wasn’t romance at first; it was survival. Watching Yoshino navigate this world and gradually develop trust with Kirishima made for an incredibly compelling story.

Absolutely. It delivered the gritty, no-nonsense romance I expected while also balancing tension, drama, and unexpected moments of humour.

Yes, this is an easy binge. The story is engaging, the pacing is solid, and if you enjoy unconventional romance with a dark edge, you’ll find yourself wanting more.

Would I Recommend It? Without hesitation. I’ve been recommending this anime since the moment I found out it was getting an adaptation. If you enjoy complex relationships, psychological depth, and high-stakes drama, Yakuza Fiancé is a must-watch.

What Could Have Been Better: The series ends on a cliffhanger, leaving fans like me hoping for a second season. While the 12 episodes are packed with content, I can’t help but wish for a 24-episode run to explore the story and characters more deeply.

Her sharp wit, resilience, and ability to navigate a dangerous world without losing herself make her a compelling protagonist. She’s not just a damsel in distress; she’s a force to be reckoned with.

  • “All the men in my life are nothing but trash.” (Episode 1)
  • “I guess I’m gonna have to live up to your expectations.” (Episode 1)
  • “Even if I have to crawl around on the floor and cough up blood, I’ll take y’all down to hell with me and ruin your lives.” (Episode 1)
  • “I’m too depressed to care.” (Episode 2)
  • “I want you to mess up my life.” (Episode 1)

Rewatching the first ten episodes and finally experiencing the last two was an incredible ride. I loved every moment, and now I’m itching to revisit the manga.

This anime met my expectations and then some. While I wish it had been a full 24-episode season, I’m grateful for what we got. Watching it again after so long reminded me why I was so excited for the adaptation in the first place. Now, I think I’ll go hunt down the manga for another reread!

Yakuza Fiancé: Raise wa Tanin ga Ii is a wild, chaotic, and thoroughly entertaining ride. It’s a series that thrives on its characters’ flaws and complexities, making their toxic romance oddly refreshing. If you’re a fan of strong protagonists, intricate character dynamics, and a touch of madness, this anime is a must-watch.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to re-read the manga and hope for a season two.

One response to “Yakuza Fiancé: Romance and Violence in the Yakuza World”

  1. Yes! This was such a great anime. I loved how gritty it was, and it didn’t sugar coat the fact that the two characters were in organized crime families. What I think I liked the most about the series was Yoshino. She was so fearsome and always stood her ground. I don’t usually like gritty anime, but this was just right. None of the violent scenes felt out of place, and everything felt like it was the to build the story rather than for shock value.
