Watching the video after reading the lyrics made me wonder how the team came up with the concept as surely, they already had the lyrics. Then I remembered that it is Studio Ghibli and I watched the music video again. The second time I finally connected some of the dots but was still somewhat lost.

Sometimes I wonder if studios try too hard to have a meaningful ending or message to projects, others I wonder if I a missing something. Like the final shot for this music video by Ghibli ends with, ‘Life is love lines’. I wonder if they are referring to the connections between people and hinting towards the ‘red-string’ that connects fated lovers in a lot of stories while saying there are not only red strings but many types of connections. Then again, I am probably reading way too deeply into the final message and have probably missed the point.

The music video made by Studio Ghibli:

The Lyrics to Piece by Yui Aragaki

I hold my unrevealing email to you
In the palm of my hand
There’s always something missing
Like an incomplete puzzle

I’m at a loss, sitting on a see-saw as the sun sets
Imagining you sitting on the other end

I don’t need a reply or a promise
Let me be connected to you, to you
The final piece is right here
I want to be your light, your light

No one ever really knows
The reasons or where they’re going
But I love you
Words are tiny things, aren’t they?

As the stars dimly float up into the sky
I start counting my wishes to them, one, two, three

I kicked the sand hard and began to run
My heart beats for you, for you
If my smile can save, I can keep on smiling
I want to be your light, your light

It softly became clear and I could see the future
I’ve never felt like this before
I finally found
The reason I came here

I don’t need a reply or a promise
Let me be connected to you, to you
The final piece is right here
I want to be your light, your light
I want to be your light
