Mayonaka Punch Episode 4 delves deeper into the characters’ backstories, particularly Fū’s. The episode provides a poignant exploration of friendship, dreams, and the challenges of pursuing one’s passions. This is the most sentimental and emotional episode of the series so far.

MAYONAKA PUNCH Episode 4 – The Star of the Next Video is Who?
Another new character is introduced, but the background music suggests that Aya may not be a prominent character. The music also made it obvious that the scene is a memory, especially since Fū has long hair. I am looking forward to learning more about Fū, as she is the one supernatural character we don’t know much about, other than her being quiet and shy.

Masaki’s unpacking was shown quickly from the audience’s perspective. I would like to know the story behind the weird porcupine teddy. The questionnaires are cute, although Masaki calling Ichiko “dumb as a rock” to her face because of her answers was harsh. I’m not saying she’s wrong, but it’s still harsh. Live’s answers are terrifying, but at least she’s honest about them. No surprise that Tokage’s favourite thing is money.

Fū having a job is surprising in the context of this anime but makes perfect sense for her character. I love that even though she is quiet, she is responsible. Masaki does not have a sense of boundaries—I cannot believe she just went into Fū’s room, knowing that she wasn’t there. Such an invasion of privacy. Honestly, Masaki is taking a long time to grow on me. Certain actions like this make me see her as self-centred and unaware that those around her have their own things going on too. Fū working at a bathhouse seems fitting for her calm nature.
Live and Masaki breaking into the bathhouse and ignoring Fū when she tells them what they did was wrong makes me question whether they actually respect Fū. I’m glad she got angry when she learned that Masaki went into her room and messed with her belongings. Masaki dismissing her anger is an issue. I wish Fū had remained upset longer, but we moved past that so quickly. Good on Fū for calling Masaki out and not giving in to their request right away.

Fū’s memories of the past are sad. Not being able to tell her friend what was happening, wanting to go pro and perform with her, and not wanting to let her down created a difficult situation. The way Yuki handled it was poorly done, but she did offer a realistic perspective. While delaying telling Aya, Fū encountered a final reality check with the outdoor stage. If it had been an indoor audition, I believe she would have gone through with it. Their audition outfits are cute.

I enjoy the montage sequences that this anime sometimes gives us to show the girls doing stuff without spending too much time on it, like in this episode where the group, excluding Fū, are looking for Aya. I enjoy Fū sticking up for herself and questioning why they “keep sticking their noses in her business”.

Fū’s sudden trip to New York was unexpected. Hearing decent English in this episode was a pleasant surprise. I’m glad that Fū knows English and spoke to the bartender. When I saw the guitar case, I wondered what had happened to Aya. When Fū told us what happened, I wasn’t too surprised, but I was sad for her. I’ve been questioning the timeline here—how long ago was the audition?

The found interview was sweet and I am glad there was that for Fū. However, hearing how her friend felt must have stung and hurt her heart. Having her find her resolve to sing again and then having the team put together a makeshift recording studio was great to watch. I am glad that we got to hear her sing at the end of the episode and wear a genuine smile.

Side note – my fiance heard Fu talking and asked me why does she sound like a healing item with boobs. This means her voice reminds him of Sicily von Claude, from Kenja no Mago (Wise Man’s Grandchild).
