BLACK TORCH is finally getting an anime adaptation! As a short but action-packed manga, it left fans wanting more, and now we have the chance to see Jiro and Rago’s story brought to life with dynamic animation and expanded storytelling. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the series, here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming adaptation.
What is BLACK TORCH?

BLACK TORCH is a shounen manga series by Tsuyoshi Takaki, initially serialised in Jump Square and Shonen Jump+ from 2017 to 2018. It is a Shōnen series combining action, science fiction and supernatural.
What is the plot of the Black Torch?

Jiro Azuma, a 17-year-old shinobi-in-training, has the rare ability to communicate with animals. Raised by his strict yet caring grandfather, Jiro spends his time honing his combat skills and protecting the creatures he loves. His peaceful routine is shattered when he rescues a black cat named Rago—who turns out to be a powerful Mononoke hunted by an even more dangerous foe. Despite being hopelessly outmatched, Jiro refuses to abandon Rago.
When a hostile Mononoke attacks, Rago makes a life-altering decision—merging with Jiro to save his life. This fusion unlocks immense supernatural abilities, enhancing Jiro’s shinobi skills beyond human limits. Their battle is witnessed by Ryousuke Shiba, an agent of the Bureau of Espionage, an organisation dedicated to keeping aggressive Mononoke in check. With little choice, Jiro is drafted into the Bureau’s elite team, Black Torch, where he must help combat a rising Mononoke faction seeking to reclaim humanity’s dominance.

What makes BLACK TORCH stand out?

BLACK TORCH delivers a thrilling mix of ninja action, supernatural elements, and talking animals—yes, talking animals! Why am I excited about the BLACK TORCH anime?

BLACK TORCH had a great premise, intriguing characters, and stunning artwork, but its short length meant it felt rushed, with little time to develop its world and relationships fully. With the anime, there’s a real opportunity to expand on what was left hanging and give the story the depth it deserves. If done right, this adaptation could be a must-watch! Questions and expectations I have for the anime:

I assume this anime will be wrapped up in a single season with probably 12 episodes, but I am hoping for 24, even though there are only 19 chapters for the manga.
- What changes or enhancements will the anime bring to the story compared to the manga?
- Will the anime explore additional character backstories or relationships that were underdeveloped in the manga?
- How will the animation style and artistic choices impact the portrayal of the action and supernatural elements?
- Will we get more than what the manga gave us?
