Cosplay is a performance art where participants, called cosplayers, wear costumes and accessories to represent characters from various media like anime, video games, comics, and movies. Cosplay, short for “costume play,” or “costume roleplay” is a creative hobby where individuals dress up as characters from anime, manga, video games, movies, and other forms of pop culture. More than just wearing costumes, cosplayers often embody the characters, mimicking their mannerisms, voice, and personality. This immersive form of self-expression allows fans to connect deeply with the characters they love while showcasing their creativity through costume design, makeup, and even performance.

For many, cosplay is a passionate and fulfilling hobby because it offers a unique blend of art, craftsmanship, and community. It encourages creative challenges, from sewing intricate costumes to building detailed props, and allows cosplayers to step into the shoes of their favourite characters, becoming part of the stories they adore. The supportive community surrounding cosplay also fosters collaboration, with many cosplayers sharing tips, tutorials, and encouragement with each other, making it not just a hobby but a thriving culture built on creativity and fandom.

Titles and Achievements:

  • Judges’ Favourite, rAge ’23
  • 1st place in Nintendo Group Cosplay, CCA ’23
  • 3rd place in Needlework, CCCT ’24
  • Cosplayers should get a Kart-Kun: Lana’s convention go-to is Kart-Kun, a wheeled companion that helps carry costumes and props around the venue. “Kart-Kun is all stickered up now,” she jokes, but it’s also a practical lifesaver. It’s much more than just a ‘fun accessory’—it’s an essential piece of gear for lugging around costumes, props, and other convention essentials.
  • Fitness for cosplay is essential: Lana emphasises the importance of being physically fit for cosplay. “Being at a convention for four days carrying costumes and props takes a toll,” she explains. Last year at the 2023 CCA convention, Lana tracked almost 47,000 steps! Her advice? Train not just for stamina but also for those dynamic poses cosplayers love to recreate from their favourite characters.
  • Her go-to pain remedy: Lana always carries ici-CO Herb Pain Gel with her, sharing that it helps with migraines, muscle pain, and even period cramps. She shares a story about retraining herself to do walkovers in cosplay, even after taking a fall during warm-ups at CCCT. Thanks to her fitness routine and support from her friends, she quickly recovered.
  • Set boundaries with photos and poses: One important reminder from Lana is to never feel pressured to take a photo or perform a pose when you’re not ready. She stresses three important optional moments for posing:
    • If you’re eating.
    • If you’re half out of costume.
    • If you’re not warmed up for a particular move.
  • Cosplay as a Fitness Motivator: For Lana, cosplay isn’t just about the aesthetic – it’s also a fun way to stay in shape. “I use cosplay as a healthy motivator to stay fit,” she shares, citing her gymnastics background as an advantage. She offers insight into one of her leg conditioning routines:

This advice is rooted in her own experience of seeing fellow cosplayers get hurt attempting unprepared moves. She urges cosplayers to prioritise safety and their own comfort above all else.

Elizabeth, known as kitty_roses in the cosplay community, has been cosplaying for seven years and has competed in both Intermediate and Masters competitions. Her insights come from personal experience, and she offers a wealth of advice for both novice and seasoned cosplayers.

  1. Prioritise Your Health – Both Mental and Physical: “Your physical and mental health are more important than any cosplay,” Elizabeth emphasises. Cosplay is exciting, but it’s easy to burn out if you push yourself too hard or get lost in the pressure of creating an elaborate costume. It’s important to take care of yourself, set realistic goals, and never compromise your well-being for cosplay deadlines.
  2. Be Realistic About Cosplay Goals: It’s easy to get carried away with grand cosplay ideas like creating a Blood Elf from World of Warcraft, but Elizabeth warns, “Don’t bite off more than you can chew.” Start small, like making a skirt or scrunchies for a wig, and build up your skills before tackling complex projects. DIY cosplays are a great way to experiment without breaking the bank on expensive materials.
  3. The Importance of Personality and Positive Attitude: Winning a cosplay competition is thrilling, but it can come with online negativity and criticism. Elizabeth suggests that you “rise above the negativity” and not let it get to you. Judges’ criticism should be seen as a way to improve your skills, not as a personal attack. Handling feedback and online comments with grace will not only improve your cosplay journey but also your resilience as a person. The cosplay community is vast, and fostering a kind and supportive environment can help you grow as an artist.
  4. Stay Safe and Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Safety is a significant concern in the cosplay world, especially when it comes to photoshoots or meeting new people. One of the most important tips from Elizabeth is to be cautious when arranging cosplay photoshoots or meeting with photographers. “Always do your research and trust your gut feelings,” she advises. If something feels off, don’t hesitate to say no. Your safety is paramount, and it’s always okay to turn down a photoshoot or request.
  5. Collaboration, Not Comparison: Elizabeth encourages cosplayers to connect with each other rather than compete. “If you see another cosplayer wearing the same costume as you, like Elsa from Frozen, don’t be snobby or snarky. Get to know them!” You might just pick up some valuable tips for improving your own cosplay.

This heartfelt advice is grounded in personal experience, and Elizabeth hopes it will inspire her fellow cosplayers to balance their passion with self-care while fostering positive connections in the community.

Jayden, better known as Warkittycos in the cosplay community, is a coffee-loving, cat-adoring cosplayer with a passion for taking on new challenges. “Con crunch” is a real struggle, and there’s nothing worse than having a wardrobe or prop malfunction during a convention. Always carry a patch kit or repair kit with you! Convention days are often filled with excitement, but they can also come with unexpected wardrobe malfunctions—especially for those in a rush, like Jayden, who admits to con crunching and sometimes facing mini cosplay crises. A patch kit allows you to quickly address any last-minute issues. As such Jayden recommends always keeping a handy patch kit or repair kit on you, tailored to your specific cosplay needs. Here’s what she recommends including in your kit:

  • Hand-sewing needles and thread that match your cosplay.
  • Mini sewing kit – a lifesaver for small tears or loose seams.
  • Glue or tape for securing props or accessories.
  • Safety pins and Bobby pins – the most commonly used items in any cosplay kit, great for quick fixes.

Having these items on hand can save the day, whether it’s fixing your own costume or helping out a fellow cosplayer. Warkittycos recalls a time when their kit came to the rescue, helping a friend sew a cape back together at a convention!

Preparation can make all the difference between a mini-crisis and smooth sailing, so don’t forget to pack your repair kit for every con!

Adrian, also known as Catastros Cosplay, brings years of stage performance experience to the cosplay world. If you’re thinking about taking your cosplay to the next level and stepping on stage, Catastros Cosplay has some simple yet effective advice to ease your nerves and help you shine.

  • Rehearse in Your Head: One of Adrian’s key tips is to run through a quick rehearsal in your mind before stepping on stage. “Even a quick little rehearsal in your head can help you from ‘freezing up’ and appearing ‘stiff’ on stage.” Visualising your movements and poses can give you the confidence to avoid stage fright, ensuring your performance looks natural and fluid.
  • Pick an EyeLine: For longer solo walks on stage, picking a fixed point or eye line and sticking with it can help you stay focused. “It helps make you look great on stage,” Adrian advises. This simple technique can make a world of difference in how confident and composed you appear to the audience.

Meet Gremlin Royalty, or simply Grem, your 21-year-old South African cosplayer who’s here to share some essential tips for surviving Comic-Con and other conventions. Whether you’re a seasoned con-goer or a first-timer, Grem’s advice is packed with practical wisdom!

Cosplay quote by Gremlin Royalty from a South African Cosplayer on allanimemag a South African Blog called All About Anime and Manga
  • Water! Hydration is Key: It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of cosplay prep, packing, and the thrill of the con itself, but Grem cannot stress enough: hydrate! “We’re all tempted to survive off coffee and Monster,” as many cosplayers joke, but don’t let dehydration ruin your day. Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the day. Stay hydrated and stay healthy!
  • Money Matters: While most vendors accept card payments or SnapScan, Grem suggests that you always have some cash on hand. “I live by the 150 rule—at least R150 in cash and the rest on card.” Having cash can save you in a pinch, especially for vendors who might not accept card payments. And don’t forget to budget for food!
  • Power Bank: Your phone is your best friend at conventions—whether for taking pictures, filming videos, or staying connected. To avoid your phone dying halfway through the day, make sure you pack a power bank and charge it the night before.
  • Comfy Shoes for Cosplayers: This one is for all the cosplayers out there who strive for character accuracy. While those high heels or boots may look amazing, don’t forget to pack a pair of comfy shoes for walking around. “Trust me, it’s better to be comfortable than to walk around with blistered feet.”
  • Medical and Sensory Aids: Grem is passionate about this tip: never leave your medical or sensory aids at home! Whether it’s a cane, fidget toy, or other mobility or sensory aids, they are there to help you. “The community won’t judge you for using your aid,” so don’t feel self-conscious—your well-being comes first.
  • Deodorant: Stay Fresh: Conventions are packed with activities, walking, and standing in long lines, which can make anyone sweat. Grem recommends packing deodorant to stay fresh throughout the day, no matter how much you’ve already prepared in the morning.
  • Flip File for Artist Alley Treasures: Here’s a fun bonus tip: bring a flip file to store all the prints, stickers, and badges you’ll inevitably buy at Artist Alley. It’s a great way to protect your purchases from getting bent or damaged during the hustle and bustle of the con.

Jeezz Louise is an innovative South African cosplayer known for her resourceful approach to creating cosplay. With an incredible knack for turning ordinary items into amazing costumes, she’s here to share her journey of using unconventional materials to bring her characters to life.

Cosplay quote by Jeezz Louise from a South African Cosplayer on allanimemag a South African Blog called All About Anime and Manga

Most cosplay advice tends to focus on the traditional steps—pattern making, fabric selection, and sewing. And while that’s all valid, Jeezz Louise discovered a different, more accessible way. When she started cosplaying, she didn’t have a sewing machine, a nearby fabric store, or even a driver’s licence. So, she got creative with what she had: curtains, carpets, old canvas, and even a busted umbrella became part of her cosplay arsenal. Jeezz Louise turned “closet cosplay” into something entirely new, and she’s still using those principles today!

(Side note: She might have also stolen her mom’s favourite tablecloth and bed sheet to make Galadriel’s dress from The Lord of the Rings. Shh, don’t tell her mom!)

Now, with a licence and access to a broader range of resources, she’s here to share some of her secrets for creating cosplay with unconventional materials.

Jeezz Louise suggests that you ask yourself these three important questions when making your cosplay:

  • Can I cut it, sew it, or stick it?
  • What’s the weight of the item?
  • What’s the cost of the item?

While working on her Sypha cosplay from Castlevania, she considered various materials she already had, like curtains, pillow covers, and satin fabric. Although the curtains were too heavy and the pillow cover wasn’t enough, she managed to source a light blue fitted bed sheet from PEP Home for only R125—a quick solution that didn’t require an hour-and-a-half drive to the fabric store.

In her Fem Tanjiro cosplay, she used the backing of curtains for leg guards, the zip from a decorative cushion, and an old school shirt collar to complete her look. By thinking outside the box, she transformed everyday items into key elements of her cosplays.

Here are Jeezz Louise’s go-to spots for sourcing unconventional materials:

  1. PEP/PEP Home: Great for cheap items you can easily alter for cosplay.
  2. Mr Price: Sometimes more expensive but a good backup in a pinch.
  3. PNA: Smaller stores may have limited stock, but they usually carry cosplay essentials.
  4. Takealot: The online store has expanded its seller base and delivery reach, making it a reliable source for cosplay needs.
  5. Cosave: A local hardware store that offers a variety of affordable materials.
  6. Grandma’s Closet: Believe it or not, grandparents often have hidden treasures that can be perfect for cosplay!
  7. Thrift Stores (e.g., “Ons Winkel”): A great resource for finding unique second-hand items at bargain prices.
  8. Yaga: An online second-hand marketplace where you can buy and sell cosplay items. Jeezz Louise even bought her Tanjiro kitana from another cosplayer through this platform!

By tapping into these resources, Jeezz Louise demonstrates that cosplay doesn’t have to be expensive or out of reach—you just need a little creativity and the willingness to explore unconventional options.

  • Baby Powder as Setting Spray Alternative: If you don’t have a setting spray, don’t worry! Baby powder works just as well for setting your makeup. Lightly dust it over your face after applying your foundation to keep your look intact all day.
  • Long-lasting Lipstick: Here’s a simple trick for keeping your lipstick looking flawless for hours. First, outline your lips before applying lipstick. Then, dab a bit of powder (you can use eyeshadow or blush) onto your lips. Add another layer of lipstick on top of that for extra staying power.
  • Spare Shoes: Conventions can be exhausting, especially for your feet! Always keep an extra pair of comfortable shoes in your car or bag. When your feet start to hurt from your cosplay shoes, you can easily switch to something more comfortable without ruining the fun.
  • Essentials for Your Convention Bag: Always carry deodorant and a bottle of water with you at all times. Staying hydrated and fresh will make your convention experience much more enjoyable, and you’ll feel confident as you pose for photos and interact with fellow fans.
