“After a bad experience in junior high, where her social anxiety was worsened by bullying, Uka Ishimori decides to change herself and the way she lives her life. Her first step is applying to Hachimitsu High School. Its attractions? A more relaxed school atmosphere, and the gruff but handsome Kai Miura.” ~ Crunchyroll
Honey Lemon Soda Episode One: Because I Met You
The opening credits instantly reminded me of romantic Korean dramas, sparking my excitement for the episode. I already have a strong feeling I’ll enjoy this romance anime. Kai Miura shaking his lemon soda and spraying it at the two boys who annoyed him—not exactly his finest decision since he drenches Uka instead.

I appreciate how Kai’s friends hold him accountable for his actions and words. Meanwhile, Uka Ishimori’s shy, socially awkward nature is painfully obvious. The nickname “Stony” feels harsh; it’s clear she’s endured a lot. Uka’s bullies are shockingly brazen, openly explaining the nickname’s purpose to mock her. I’m eager to see her character grow from here. Her bravery in class when sharing the answer with Ayumi Endou was inspiring.

I’m already captivated by the stunning eye shots in this series; they’re absolutely gorgeous, but maybe the series is overusing their eye shots.

Uka’s defence mechanism of refusing to react when her shoes were thrown away was heart-wrenching. It showed that she has gone through this so many times and does not want to let this impact her. Kai urging her to ask someone for help revealed his different upbringing; he likely always had someone to lean on. When she quietly asked “who?” it broke my heart further, making Kai’s shocked reaction all the more powerful.

I loved how the episode tied back to its opening scene, from Uka on the sidewalk to her taking inspiration from Kai’s soda-spraying moment. That full-circle storytelling was satisfying and emotionally impactful.
Kai might just be leading me to develop a praise kink.

The reveal that Kai remembered their first encounter made me so happy—though it makes sense that her crying the way she did would leave an impression.

Adding to the emotional weight of the episode is the evocative background music, which enhances the mood without overshadowing the story. The combination of visual beauty, meaningful character moments, and heartfelt music makes this a compelling opening chapter in Uka and Kai’s journey.
Notable Characters in this episode:
Kai Miura: With his striking blond hair and carefree yet commanding presence, Kai immediately grabs attention. His initial actions are playful yet impulsive, such as shaking and spraying lemon soda to dismiss bullies. Though seemingly indifferent, moments like advising Uka to seek help hint at a deeper empathy beneath his aloof exterior. His friends holding him accountable for his actions suggests a support system that keeps him grounded, setting up potential layers to his character. His initial disinterest gives way to moments of sincerity, especially when he reveals that he remembers Uka from their first encounter, hinting at a budding emotional connection.

Uka Ishimori: Uka’s shy and socially awkward demeanour contrasts sharply with Kai’s boldness. Nicknamed “Stony” by bullies, she’s portrayed as a loner with a history of being isolated. Despite her timid exterior, Uka demonstrates moments of bravery, such as sharing answers in class and maintaining composure when harassed. Her quiet strength becomes evident when she refuses to react to having her shoes thrown away—a heartbreaking glimpse into the emotional scars left by persistent bullying.

Ayumi Endou: Instantly likeable as a supportive and kind classmate. Her interactions with Uka, like offering her a tissue and encouraging her, demonstrate her genuine empathy and create a positive contrast to the bullying Uka faces. Ayumi shines as my favourite character of this episode.
