MAYONAKA PUNCH Episode 8 – Starring in TSUMA FES Extreme!

Ah, yes, the much-anticipated Tsuma Fes, the event for newtubers, took centre stage in this week’s episode of MAYONAKA PUNCH. From the outset, I was curious to see if Masaki and the girls would cross paths with the Hype-sisters and how Masaki, in particular, would navigate her interactions with the other newtubers who would probably know her.

I am glad that Masaki was recognised. While I’m excited about these fresh faces, I can’t help but wonder if they will become recurring, active participants in the story or if they’re just a fleeting addition with no lasting impact. Basically, will there be a bunch of new names we don’t need to remember?

My heart absolutely broke for Fū. The no-show was a tough blow, and it was painful to watch her struggle with stage fright. I love the introduction to the new characters that the girls will be collaborating with. There are some very interesting individuals and personalities there. These individuals have such interesting and varied personalities, making them immediately engaging. I particularly loved Yuki’s comment about feeling like a parent watching their child’s school play—it was a humourous yet touching moment that added depth to her character.

Fū’s collaboration partner, Shura has an amazing voice. I can’t believe they are doing this without rehearsal. The fact that they’re diving into this event without a rehearsal seemed both thrilling and nerve-wracking. Poor Fū, though—stage fright is a harsh reality that many performers face, and it was depicted so well here. I can not help but feel that the Outside Kids being late was deliberate.

Tokage’s approach to the chained game of Red Light Green Light was both intense and exhilarating. You could almost see the hunter within her emerge, as if she was tapping into a primal instinct to hunt and torment if necessary. It was satisfying to see her upstage the latecomers, asserting her dominance in a way that felt both deserved and necessary. The portrayal of the unhinged fans added a layer of chaos and comedy, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Ichiko’s obsession with prioritising ingredients was simply adorable. What just happened to Live and what are alien tacos? Garlic, garlic happened. Masaki’s decision-making throughout the event was conflicting for me. On one hand, she chose to prioritise the event over the very real risk of her friends’ secret being exposed due to the energy drink debacle. On the other hand, I could understand her desperation and the pressure she was under. The timing couldn’t have been better for a scandal to erupt for the girls. Considering everything, I think Masaki handled the situation as well as she could, though I’m still uneasy about the potential fallout.

Desperate times call for desperate plans, but all things considered, I think Masaki came up with a decent one. The collaboration failures, while unfortunate, were somewhat amusing to watch, especially with the presence of those overzealous fictional fans (emphasis on fictional!). I am glad to see the girls are thinking through how to hide their abilities – well some of them. As well as Masaki doing everything she can for them.

And then, the return of Masaki’s punch—what a moment! The perfectly timed photo that followed only added to the tension. I can’t help but wonder what could possibly go wrong next. That punch, however, came at a cost, as she took quite a beating. I’m sure that’s going to leave some painful bruises.

The episode wrapped up with Masaki seemingly realising something crucial as she watched the others on stage, especially Live. What could this mean for her going forward? It’s a question that’s sure to keep me watching and anticipating episode 9.
