Hey there, fellow anime lover! Whether you’re diving into one of my detailed series breakdowns or just skimming my quickfire episode reactions, you’ve probably noticed something a little different: I use two anime rating systems depending on the type of review. Yep, totally intentional, and here’s why!

For me, anime isn’t just something you consume, it’s something you feel. Some moments hit like an emotional truck, others are slow burns that only show their brilliance once the full story has unfolded. To do justice to both experiences, I’ve created a dual-scale review system that reflects the immediate emotional impact and the overall narrative execution.

Let’s take a closer look!

Anime Rating System

These are for those punchy, in-the-moment episode reactions—whether it’s a jaw-dropping twist, a flawless animation sequence, or a character finally getting their long-awaited arc. I use a 5-star system to capture my first impressions right after the credits roll.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) – Exceptional

A masterfully executed episode that hits every note—emotionally, visually, narratively. It leaves me reeling, buzzing, or crying happy tears. These are the episodes I’ll remember and rewatch forever.

Total highlight material.

⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5) – Great

Thoroughly enjoyable, polished, and creative. It might not completely blow your mind, but you’ll walk away smiling. A great episode that delivers on most fronts and leaves a warm impression.

Definitely a keeper.

⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3/5) – Good / Solid

A pleasant and competent episode. It does its job, but maybe plays it safe or stumbles with tone or pacing. Still fun, just not particularly memorable.

Reliable, but not revelatory.

⭐⭐☆☆☆ (2/5) – Below Average

There’s potential here, but it’s weighed down by inconsistency, lack of direction, or flat emotional delivery. If I was hyped, I probably walked away disappointed.

You win some, you lose some.

⭐☆☆☆☆ (1/5) – Poor

These are very rare. But when they happen, they’re tough. Either the story fell apart, the tone missed completely, or the production was a mess.

An episode that simply didn’t work for me.

Anime Rating System

Once I’ve finished a full series or movie, I switch over to a 10-point scale to give a broader, more thoughtful evaluation. These reviews look at story arcs, emotional payoff, visual direction, pacing, themes, character growth, and overall cohesion.

Here’s the heart of that scale:

10/10 – Masterpiece Tier

A work of art. Emotional, breathtaking, and technically brilliant. These are the shows that change how I think about anime—flawless in both heart and craft.

9/10 – Outstanding: These stick with me long after the end

Nearly perfect, with maybe one or two minor flaws. Deeply impactful, emotionally satisfying, and brilliantly made.

8/10 – Great: Strongly recommend

High quality, entertaining, and memorable. It may not reach masterpiece status, but it’s engaging and well-made, with a lot to love.

7/10 – Good: Not mid. Genuinely good

This is my most common score, and it means just that: good! Solid writing, likeable characters, and enjoyable pacing—maybe with a few bumps, but still very much worth watching.

6/10 – Decent: Nice if you’re a fan of the genre, but not essential

Fine, but forgettable. There might’ve been a cool idea or character, but the execution didn’t quite get there.

5/10 – Mixed / Average: Had promise, but didn’t deliver

An uneven experience. For every strength, there’s a weakness—be it clunky pacing, tonal shifts, or shallow writing. I probably walked away indifferent.

4/10 – Weak: A rough watch

There was potential, but it was largely squandered. Either the narrative didn’t flow or the characters didn’t click. I struggled to stay invested.

3/10 – Poor: Disappointing and inconsistent

Major flaws dragged the experience down. I might’ve watched it to the end out of curiosity, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

2/10 – Very Poor: Watch only for meme value

Almost no redeeming qualities. The story might be incoherent, the visuals uninspired, or the characters painfully flat.

1/10 – Fundamentally Broken: A total misfire

I rarely use this score. But when I do, it’s because the anime was a complete failure—offensive, lazy, incoherent, or outright disrespectful to its audience.

Anime is an emotional art form. Some episodes deliver unforgettable highs in isolation, while some series only show their genius after the slow build. That’s why I honour both the immediate punch of a single episode and the reflective journey of an entire series.

So, whether you’re scrolling for a quick vibe check or settling in for a deep dive, now you know exactly what my ratings mean. I hope this guide helps you find your next favourite, or understand why something hit—or missed—for me.

At the end of the day, my anime rating system isn’t just about scoring, they’re about connection. Anime is so personal, and I try to be as honest and heartfelt as I can when reviewing. Whether it’s a 10/10 emotional rollercoaster or a 2-star disappointment, I want every review to feel thoughtful and transparent.
