Occult Academy thrives on chaos. It gave us paranormal mysteries, temporal paradoxes, and plenty of supernatural scares. And yet, tucked into the background of all that noise, there are small, human interactions that feel surprisingly grounded. For me, one of those is the dynamic between Smile and Ami.
The series never makes their relationship overtly romantic. There are no declarations, no dramatic beats, no narrative spotlight. But there is warmth, familiarity, and a steady ease between them that made me want something more for these two, especially on a rewatch, when the quieter moments have room to breathe.
5 Reasons Smile and Ami Work So Well Together
These are my favourite subtle reads from a recent rewatch of the background dynamics in Occult Academy. Side characters don’t get much spotlight, but sometimes the quietest connections linger the longest.
1. Ami Knows Exactly How to Get Smile on Board
When Ami needs Smile’s help, she doesn’t argue, plead, or escalate the situation. She bribes him, and not with anything generic. She offers a nine-piece hex wrench set, the latest model riding gloves, and five litres of engine oil.
What stands out isn’t just that Smile caves, but how specific the bribe is. These are items chosen for him, tailored to his interests as a mechanic. Ami knows what will work, and the exchange is played lightly, with her smiling and laughing as he gives in.
It’s an interaction built on familiarity rather than persuasion. She doesn’t make it a big moment, and he doesn’t resist for long. That ease suggests an understanding already in place, even if the series never spells out how or when it formed.
2. They’re Reliable Stabilisers and Unspoken Partners
Amid the show’s dramatic arcs and loud personalities, Simle and Ami are the quiet anchors. Ami carries a lot emotionally (especially supporting Maya through grief and anger), while Smile provides steady, no-credit-needed backup.
They often share the same space in group scenes, standing or sitting near each other, falling into natural teamwork during occult crises or searches. There’s no performance, no need to negotiate roles; they just work side by side with effortless trust.
It’s the kind of easy collaboration that comes from real comfort: no ego, no competition, just two people who gravitate toward each other because they value the same kind of steadiness.
3. His Demeanour Shifts When She’s Around
Smile is usually laid-back and emotionally contained. He shows up, does the work, and moves on without much fuss. Which is why Episode 10 stands out.
At the end of the ghost child storyline, Smile says, “Now no one will cry while I’m trying to work on the car.” Ami responds by playfully pushing him and saying, “You’re sad about it.”
Smile immediately denies it with a “I am not”, but blushes as he says so.
It’s a small moment, easy to miss, and completely unremarked upon by the narrative. But it matters. Ami notices an emotional undercurrent that others don’t comment on, and Smile reacts defensively rather than brushing it off. For a character who keeps his feelings tightly contained, that reaction reads as being caught off guard.
The series doesn’t linger on it. And that restraint is exactly what makes it feel genuine. That blush is a rare crack in the armour, a tell from someone who clearly cares what Ami thinks and who’s caught off guard by her attention in a way that matters.
4. Smile Naturally Integrates Into Ami’s World
One detail that stood out on rewatch: how comfortably Smile integrates into Ami’s personal life, particularly around her father.
Ami’s father is eccentric, theatrical, and deeply invested in elaborate schemes, including the infamous alien prank. Smile doesn’t dismiss him, mock him, or distance himself from the chaos. Instead, he listens. He participates. He treats Ami’s father with a quiet, matter-of-fact respect that feels genuine rather than performative.
That matters. Smile isn’t a character who indulges in nonsense for the sake of humour. When he chooses to engage, it’s because he’s decided the situation, and the people involved, are worth taking seriously. His willingness to get involved with Ami’s father’s antics suggests a level of patience and acceptance that goes beyond basic group obligation.
When Ami is kidnapped, and the group prepares to rescue her, the animators make a deliberate choice to keep Smile in frame while Ami’s father is being informed. Even when he’s slightly blurred or positioned in the background, Smile remains visibly present. He isn’t pushed out of the emotional space of the scene. Instead, he’s included as part of the response.
As the rescue effort ramps up, Smile is given notable screen time, swinging his giant wrench as the group prepares to act. It’s practical, action-oriented animation, but it also visually reinforces his role. He’s not just there to fight. He’s there because Ami matters, and helping to get her back is something he commits to fully, without hesitation.
It’s a subtle storytelling choice, but a meaningful one. Smile doesn’t just support Ami directly; he shows up in the spaces that matter to her, listens to the people important to her, and integrates himself into her world without being asked.
That kind of quiet involvement says a lot, especially for a character who rarely says much at all.
5. The Subtext Is Written in Small, Authentic Moments
There’s no single moment you can point to and say, “This is where it becomes romantic.” Instead, there’s consistency.
They appear together often enough to feel connected (yes, I am deliberately ignoring JK). They interact without awkwardness or explanation. They trust each other implicitly.
The banter that only happens between people who know each other well enough to tease. The way Ami can tell when something’s wrong with Smile. The way he responds to her is different from the way he responds to anyone else. The comfortable silences. The unspoken understanding.
These aren’t flashy, obvious gestures designed to signal romance. They’re the kind of intimacy that grows slowly, rooted in familiarity and genuine care. It’s the difference between infatuation and something deeper.
Their connection feels authentic because it doesn’t announce itself. It just exists, steady and sure, in the spaces between the main plot.
So, overall, why do I ship Smile and Ami?
Because they feel real.
Because their care for each other is rooted in genuine familiarity, not drama or manufactured tension. Because Ami sees Smile in ways he doesn’t let others see him, and because Smile shows up for her in ways that matter.
Because in a show full of supernatural chaos and emotional turmoil, their grounded, authentic dynamic stands out. Because the little moments, the blush, the banter, the easy partnership, add up to something that feels like it could be more than friendship if the story had leaned into it.
Their relationship (whatever label you put on it) feels lived-in. It doesn’t need validation from the narrative to feel real. It simply is.
I don’t need them to be canon to appreciate what they share. Their bond already feels complete. But the chemistry is there, subtle and unspoken, and that’s exactly what makes it so compelling.
