Witch Hunter, A review

It has been a while since I last did a manga review. Witch Hunter surprised me, I started reading it on a whim after seeing it in my manga line up on the app I use. I had seen it a few times but never I was never really interested in it, even after reading the write-up but I was bored so opened the first chapter and have not looked back.

The witches are at war against humanity and humanity is struggling with two-thirds of the world already fallen to the witches. The remaining humans have created a group with specialists who have the ability to track and capture witches called Witch Hunters. The “Magic Marksman”, Tasha Godspell is an A class Witch Hunter whose only goal is to rescue his sister who suddenly became a witch and once again live with his mother and sister as a happy family. He has a sword-wielding Jack-o’-Lantern partner known as Halloween who suddenly turns into a girl after being forced to release one of Pumpkin’s seals. Tasha puts his magical training and weaponry to good use, in his constant battles against witches. And yet, he cannot bring himself to fully hate the very witches he is tasked to destroy while trying to rescue his sister, adjust to the teammates that were forced upon him and not fall in love with his partner because even though his feelings may be real, hers are just lies forced upon her by the supporter contract.

My Thoughts:

I really, really wish there was an anime adaptation because I really want to see these characters and scenarios brought to life.

It took a while for me to get used to reading a manga left to right. I kept wanting to read right to left. It was an interesting time reminding me of days where I had the opposite problem of being stuck and having to remind myself to read right to left. I sat and binge read all 178 chapters over 3 days. I was worried that this might be one of those that no longer get chapter releases or take a very long time to get another chapter out. The second option might be true but I was really happy this morning when my app notified me that chapter 178 was available.

The characters are amusing and the story keeps me hooked and wanting to unravel what happened in the past and wondering what will happen next and who is an enemy and who are allies? Plus what is North really up to since East has now told us two different options. Maybe those options are linked together but I am still conflicted.

The plot is easy to follow and keep track of even though there are so many chapters available. There are not many side plots so it really is easy to understand where and why the events take place. I am really impressed with the characterization and the interaction between the characters. It has been a while since I last laughed as much from the character antics with one another without the action feeling forced. It is as if the mangaka has truly understood the characters and how they would react in each situation rather than forcing the character to behave a certain way to make the story progress further which really is an impressive feat.

I want Tasha to be real but his sister can remain fictional. Although we do get a brief look at the time that they lived together as siblings before she became a witch I still can not connect with her character but I can understand why Tasha wants to save her.

It is the same with Pumpkin, I did not like the doll but after releasing one of the seals I really came to like her and her headstrong stubborn self. I also really connected with and appreciated and laughed at Tasha’s relationship with money. I appreciated it even more after realizing what he was doing with his money especially after learning about his history.

The artwork itself is pretty good. It is clean and precise with a lot of detail and you can really pick up on each situation and emotion which I really do love.

I would and already have recommended this as one to read. The romance is not a dominant feature whereas the comedy, action and adventure are. I also did not notice much on the ecchi side. Then again I have moved past big boobs and skimpy clothing as Ecchi… I have been ruined thanks to shows like Highschool DXD, Bikini Warriors and the like.
