Originally a human, he had been studying Japanese Literature at Kamii University and living a normal life. Until Kaneki goes of a deadly date with Rize, who unbeknownst to him is a ghoul. After the date he is rushed to hospital to receive an emergency transplant. They use Rize’s (who had been killed) organs. Upon waking Kaneki has no appetite and finds food repulsive. He is then forced to come to the realization that he is no longer a human. Yet he is not a ghoul either.

While a young boy his mother died leaving him to fend for himself. While at university Kaneki is a scrawny young man with little to no athletic background who prefers to read books. Once he had started working at Anteiku as a waiter he wears their uniform and an eye patch. He is forced to wear an eye patch because he is unable to control the ghoul side of him.

The mask that Kaneki wears hides his normal eye and leaves open his ghoul eye. His mask bares a lipless mouth that shows large, gnashing teeth, much like restrained asylum monster.

While Kaneki was tortured his hair becomes white and he looses his docile nature. He also started wearing a form fitting black outfit when he had the intention of fighting as a ghoul, both for intimidation and practicality.

Kaneki’s closest friends are Hide, who he has known since childhood and Touka since becoming a ghoul. Kaneki gets stronger as the series progresses. In season 2 Kaneki is on a whole other level when comparing him to season 1. Kaneki is a rare in the way that he eats other ghouls, which is slowly driving him insane and making it difficult for him to contain himself. His trademark mask also changes as we see various ‘forms’ of his ability.

Kaneki Ken is voiced by Natsuki Hanae in the Japenease version (Subbed) and by Austin Tindle in the English dub.
