Black Butler

  • Genre: Historical, Black Comedy, Dark Fantasy, Psychological thriller
  • Season: 1
  • Episodes: 24 +1 OVA

Set in the Victorian-era London, Ciel Phantomhive, a thirteen year old boy has lost both his parents due to a fire that engulfed the manor house. During the fire he was captured by a mysterious organization and tortured. One month later Ciel returns to the manor as head of the Phantomhive family and with a new butler, Sebastian Michaelis who is, ‘one hell of a butler’. To outsiders Sebastian is the best in his trade, no one ever suspecting that he is demon that has entered into a contract with Ciel.  Working as the Queens Watchdog, Ciel investigates murders and other crimes that plague London.   All the while Ciel is researching and waiting for his revenge.

My Thoughts:

I loved it. The dry humor, the arrogance, the mystery, it all appealed to me. I loved the flipped view where the demon was the good guy. Honestly the first time I watched episode one I decided to give the whole anime a skip. It was only through reading other reviews I decided to revisit it. This was the anime that taught me my ‘don’t judge until episode 5’ rule. The characters  are well characterized with varying personalities. Each character has multiple sides to them which is slowly revealed The artwork is consistent and well detailed. There are various aspects to this anime from tragic to that’s just insane. There are a few unexpected ‘fan service’ scenes that pop up when you least expect it.

Yes I am one of the girl’s ‘fan-girling’ over Sebastian and Grell!
