Comic Con coming to Africa!

I saw my social media feed explode with the news that Comic Con is coming to Africa, however, I did not get too excited. Africa is a big place after all. Then my excitement grew when I read that it would be coming to South Africa, which meant it was the right country for me. Yet, I still held my breath, because, it is still a big country and travelling is expensive. Then I could no longer contain my excitement when I saw that Comic Con Africa is going to be hosted in Kyalami which is roughly a 40-minute drive. I can easily live with the drive!

This year’s Comic Con Africa will be the first one hosted in South Africa which is really exciting. Reed Exhibitions Africa and ReedPOP have teamed up with VS Gaming to make this happen.

Africa had been part of the strategy to share Comic Con, which is a multi-genre entertainment, comic and fan convention, with various countries around the globe. Thankfully we (South Africa) were next in line. Plus it was time to create an event where the fastgrowing POP Culture fan base could get together to celebrate, share and participate.

Comic Con Africa promises to cover a large range of pop culture and entertainment elements such as:

  • Toys & Gadgets
  • Clothing
  • Anime & manga
  • Comic Books
  • Collectable card games
  • Video games
  • Webcomics
  • Fantasy novels
  • and more

Comic Con Africa shall also have an Artists Alley, where comic artists can sign autographs and sell sketches as well as display their skills. While keeping to the geek nature there will be an array of exciting activities to enjoy.

Plus there will be professional gaming tournaments. Comic Con Africa visitors can also enjoy international and local celebrity panel discussions, seminars, workshops and autograph sessions.

The Deats:

  • When: 14 (Fri), 15(Sat), 16(Sun) September
  • Where: Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit and International Convention Centre
  • Ticket Pricing:
    • Kids under 6 are so lucky, they get in for FREE!
    • The rest of us pay:
      • Friday – R120 per person
      • Saturday – R150 per person
      • Sunday – R150 per person

You can get your tickets here from Computicket.

Cosplay and Comic Con

Comic Con Africa shall be hosting a Cosplay Competition in association with industry partners, however, they have not yet released all the details but have promised that they would be “released soon”.

Comic Con Africa is planned to be an annual event and while it will be hosted in Johannesburg for now, there are plans to expand and share the event with other cities and countries within Africa in the future!

Am I excited? Heck Yeah! Are you?
